Purpose

Pain provocation tests used to identify SI joint dysfunction.

Technique

Posterior Gapping

Patient is positioned supine.

Clinician stands on one side of the patient.

Clinician places his hands on the lateral side of both ASISs and iliac crests.

Clinician then attempts to squeeze together or squish the two sides.

Anterior Gapping

Patient is positioned supine.

Clinician stands on one side of the patient.

Clinician crosses his arms and places the ulnar side of his hands on the medial anterior potion of both ASISs.

Clinician then applies gentle pressure to squeeze or squish the two sides.

Positive

Reproduction of SI joint pain.

Interpretation

A positive test indicates SI joint dysfunction.
