Clarke’s Test

Purpose
This test is used to determine if a patient has patellar chondromalacia.
Technique
Patient is positioned in long sitting.
Clinician stands on the side that is being tested.
Clinician uses the web space of his cranial hand to cup the superior border of the patella.
Clinician’s caudal hand is below the patella on the tibia for support.
Clinician asks the patient to contract her quads.
Clinician provides resistance to the patella movement and compression to the patella.
Positive
Production of pain
Interpretation
A positive test indicates patella chondromalacia on the side being tested.
