FABER Test

Purpose

A screening test for hip, lumbar, or SI joint dysfunction.

Technique

Patient is positioned supine.

Clinician stands opposite the side being tested.

Clinician flexes knee of side being tested placing her ankle next to her knee.

Clinician places cranial hand on the ASIS opposite the side being tested.

Clinician uses caudal hand to abduct the leg on the side being tested.

Clinician then repeats the procedure on the opposite side.

Positive

Production of pain into the hip, lumbar, and/or SI.

Interpretation

The location of the pain corresponds to dysfunction in that area.
