Hawkins-Kennedy Test

Purpose

A test to identify subacromial impingement.

Technique

Patient is positioned in sitting.

Patient’s arm is brought into 90° of flexion then IR as horizontally adducted across body.

Patient’s arm is then put into ER as the Clinician horizontally abducts the arm back out to the starting position.

Positive

Production of pain, clicking, irritation, or clunking with movement.

Interpretation

A positive test indicates subacromial impingement.
