Purpose

A muscle energy technique used to correct an inferiorly located pubic symphysis.

Technique

Patient is positioned supine.

Clinician stands on the affected side.

Clinician flexes hip of the affected side up as far as possible.

Clinician uses his cranial hand to brace the opposite ASIS.

Clinician positions the knee of affected leg in his axilla.

Clinician makes a fist with his caudal hand and places up under the ischial tuberosity of the affected leg.

Clinician asks patient to try straightening her leg while he provides resistance to the movement.

Clinician has patient hold the position for 5-8 seconds then has her relax.

Clinician would retest the pubic symphysis position and perform 2-3 more repetitions if the pubic symphysis was found to still be out of place.
