Pelvic Drop Test

Purpose
Tests the function of gluteus medius and quadrates lumborum.
Technique
Patient stands with one leg on a stool.
Clinician stands in front of the patient and hold’s patient hands to help keep the patient steady and in place.
Clinician tells patient to keep the standing knee straight and then asks the patient to hike the other hip up and down like she is trying to touch the floor with her toes and then bring it back up.
Positive
Patient unable to do 10 normal continuous repetitions without substitution.
Interpretation
Positive test indicates weak gluteus medius on standing leg and/or weak quadrates lumborum on the moving leg.
