SI Joint – Active Hip Flexion Test

Purpose
This is a functional SI joint test that asses the mobility of the SI joint.
Technique
Patient is positioned standing.
Clinician stands behind patient and palpates PSISs.
Clinician asks patient to stand on one leg and flex the opposite hip as far as she can.
Clinician observes PSIS movement. Clinician expects to see PSIS on side of flexed hip drop and move lower then return to its starting position when hip is straightened.
Clinician repeats the test on the patient’s other side.
Positive
Clinician observes asymmetrical movement or no movement.
Interpretation
Patient has a hypomobility on the side of asymmetrical movement or no movement.
