Spurling’s Test

Purpose

This test is used to determine if the patient has cervical radiculopathy. Also called the foraminal compression test.

Technique

Patient is positioned in sitting.

Clinician asks patient to turn his head to the uninvolved side then to turn his head to the involved side.

Clinician has the patient bring his head back to neutral and the Clinician applies a downward pressure to the patient’s head.

Positive

Production of radicular symptoms with compression.

Interpretation

A positive test indicates cervical radiculopathy.
