Tibial Distraction in Sitting

Purpose

A mobilization technique used to increase knee mobility.

Technique

Patient is positioned sitting with legs of the edge of the plinth.

A rolled up towel is placed under the hamstring area to elevate the leg for proper alignment.

Clinician sits on a stool in front of the patient.

Clinician crosses his feet and uses his knees or legs to sandwich the leg to be mobilized just above the malleoli.

Clinician places his thumbs anteriorly on the tibial plateaus.

Clinician distracts the tibia by straightening his knees.

Once distracted, the Clinician can also do an ER or IR of the tibia.
